Positive product criticism

You know what the part has to withstand, where it sits and what it is specified to do. We know what a steel die and a melt will actually give you. The review is where those two meet — and it happens before you get a price, not after.

The term

Why we call it criticism

Because that is what it is. We go through your drawing and point at what does not work.

The word “positive” is there because the purpose is not to send the part back, but to make it cheaper to produce. Every change we propose points at one of two things: less metal or a shorter cycle. Those are two of the five things you pay for on every single part, for the life of the series.

There is a real asymmetry here worth saying out loud. We earn more on a heavy part with a long cycle than on a light part with a short one. We consistently propose the light one anyway. The reason is simple: a series that runs for ten years is worth more to us than a margin krone per part, and a part that is properly designed is a series that runs.

The checklist

The six questions we ask your drawing

This is not a secret, and we gain nothing from keeping it to ourselves. Run the list on your own design before you send it — the more you have cleared up, the faster we get to a price.

Is the wall thickness even?

Metal shrinks as it solidifies. If one section is twice as thick as the next, it freezes last and draws metal from its surroundings. The result is shrinkage porosity inside and distortion outside.

Fix: core out thick sections, or replace solid section with ribs. Ribs give stiffness without mass.

Is there draft?

The part has to come out of the die. Without draft it sticks, tears on ejection and wears the tool faster.

Fix: add draft to every face across the direction the die opens — including internal faces, holes and cut-outs.

Have sharp internal corners been replaced with radii?

A sharp internal corner concentrates stress in the part — it cracks there first. And it cracks the die, which shows up as flash on the part.

Fix: put radii in. They cost nothing in the casting and give both a stronger part and a longer-lived tool.

Are there undercuts?

An undercut stops the die opening. It is solved with slides — perfectly feasible, but that means a more expensive tool, a longer cycle and one more place for flash.

Fix: if the function can be achieved without an undercut, drop it. If it is necessary, say so early so it is priced correctly from the start.

Where can the parting line and ejector points sit?

Where the die splits there is a thin line of flash. Where the ejector pins push there are marks. Both are unavoidable — the only question is where they land.

Fix: mark on the drawing which faces are visible or functionally critical. Then we put the parting line elsewhere.

Are the tolerances realistic for casting?

Casting gives you a tolerance. If the requirement is tighter, the face has to be machined — and that means machining allowance, which is metal you pay for and machine time you pay for.

Fix: put tight tolerances only where the function actually needs them. Five critical dimensions on a part is normal. Fifty is a misunderstanding.

Which metal?

Aluminium when weight is a cost or the part will be anodised. Zinc when detail is fine, walls thin, dimensions critical — or when mass is an advantage.

Which process?

Pressure die casting for thin walls, complex geometry and volume. Gravity casting when the part needs heat treatment or the series is smaller.

Should it be cast at all?

Sometimes the answer is no. If the part is simple enough for folded sheet, or the series small enough for machining from solid, we will say so. That is cheaper for both of us than a tool that never pays off.
