Shot weight — definition

The total mass of metal injected per shot, including the parts, the runners and the overflows.

Shot weight is not the same as part weight. A shot contains the part or parts, the runner system that carried the metal in, and the overflows that received the first, coldest melt.

The difference matters commercially, because pricing is based on metal consumed, not on the finished part. The surplus metal is remelted, but that costs energy and handling every time.

A well-designed gating system is therefore both a technical and a commercial exercise.
