Overflow — definition

An extra cavity outside the part that receives the first, coldest melt and the air pushed ahead of the fill front.

The first melt to reach a cold die loses heat quickly and would cause cold shuts if it stayed in the part. The overflows capture it and move the problem out of the section.

At the same time the overflows act as vents: the air in the cavity has to leave somewhere, and it should leave where the metal arrives last.

Overflows are removed during fettling and remelted. They still count towards the shot weight, and therefore towards the price.
