Powder coating — definition
Electrostatic application of dry powder, fused into a continuous film in an oven.
The powder is electrostatically charged and drawn to the earthed part, which is then cured in an oven. The result is an even, wear-resistant, colour-controlled layer.
Three things are worth knowing for a casting:
Colour has to be specified in a system. RAL or NCS, with a permitted deviation. Black is not a specification.
Coating insulates electrically. If the part has to be earthed or shield electromagnetically, the contact faces must be masked before coating or machined clean afterwards. This has to be on the drawing.
Curing happens at elevated temperature. On a die casting with trapped gas that can raise blisters. If the part is porous, the coating can also develop pinholes where gas escapes during curing.
We do not powder coat in house. It is outsourced, and we state the added lead time in the quotation.
