Parting line — definition

The line where the two die halves meet, which always prints onto the finished part.

Every casting has a parting line. It can be made neat, but it cannot be made to disappear. As the tool wears it becomes more visible, because flash increases.

Where the parting line runs is one of the first decisions in tool design, and it also governs how much draft is needed where, and whether slide cores are required.

On a visible part this is a design decision. Mark the visible faces on the drawing and we will place the parting line outside them — or turn it into a deliberate design line, which is often the neatest solution.
