Fettling — definition
Removal of runners, overflows and flash from the finished casting.
The part that comes out of the tool is not finished. It is still attached to the runner system, carries overflows and has flash along the parting line.
Fettling removes all of it. Part of the job can be done in a trim tool, the rest is manual work.
This is probably the step most often underestimated in a costing. Certain geometries put flash in places that are awkward to reach, and fettling then quickly eats the gain from a short cycle time. It is one of the points we look at during the castability review.
