DFM — design for manufacturability — definition
A review of a design aimed at making it simpler, faster and cheaper to manufacture without weakening its function.
We call it positive product criticism, and it is a fixed part of the enquiry process — before pricing, not after.
The review asks six questions: Is the wall thickness even? Is there draft? Have sharp internal corners been replaced with radii? Are there undercuts requiring slide cores? Where should the parting line and the ejector points go? Are the tolerance requirements realistic for casting?
The point is that the customer knows what the part has to withstand and what it has to do. We know what can be cast and what it costs. The answer lies in the overlap, and it only exists if we get in before the design is locked.
