Stamping — definition
Blanking and forming sheet in a dedicated press tool, at very high volume and very low cost per part.
Stamping is the cheapest way to make flat or simply formed parts in very high volumes. The tool is expensive, the cycle is a fraction of a second, and the unit price becomes very low.
The method loses to casting as soon as the geometry becomes genuinely three-dimensional, the wall thickness has to vary, or the part needs integrated features such as threads, ribs and bosses.
